Background
The UBC Centre for Disease Control, in partnership with the BC Centre for Disease Control and Pacific Public Health Foundation, is hosting the 2026 One Health Forum to bring together environmental, animal, and human health practitioners, researchers, policymakers, Indigenous leaders, and community partners to advance coordinated, inclusive, and internationally connected One Health approaches to health preparedness.
Escalating climate, ecological, and socioeconomic pressures are intensifying interconnected risks to environmental, animal, and human health, with direct implications for emergency preparedness, pandemic prevention, and global health security. Grounded in the Coast Salish teaching of Nuts a maht—“we are one”—the Forum recognizes the interconnected and interdependent health of humans, animals, and the environment, and the importance of approaching health through this relational lens.
This event will take place on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
Objectives
- Strengthen cross-sector and cross-jurisdictional collaboration by connecting international, national, and regional leaders across environmental, animal, and human health to advance coordinated One Health approaches.
- Advance practical knowledge and implementation of One Health approaches by sharing tools, case studies, and systems-level strategies that support surveillance, prevention, early detection, and response.
- Apply Indigenous knowledge and perspectives by creating space for reflection on Indigenous frameworks of interconnectedness, such as the Coast Salish teaching of Nuts’a maht (we are one), to inform and strengthen One Health approaches.
Expected Outcomes
- Bolstered international, national, and regional relationships across human, animal, and environmental health
- Strengthened understanding of:
- Global One Health priorities and emerging risks
- Effective systems-level approaches to addressing One Health challenges
- Intersections between Indigenous approaches to interconnectedness and how they can help improve the global response to One Health challenges
Target Audience
- Animal, environmental, and human health practitioners
- One Health researchers
- Government representatives and policy- and decision-makers
- Indigenous health leaders
- Academics and researchers
